         except that if an error happens go back to the previous node.
         Faster in the usual case (where no error), and simpler.
         Do not allow abbreviations for node names.
         If tag table, get immediate error on node not in it.

        it makes things unpredictable; whether buffer is
        modified in Rmail doesn't always correlate with
        what the user is thinking about.
