   7 capture. Thus my mother bestowed the quite American name *Maytag* upon
   8 the tiny gray kitten.

  10 Eventually my mother accepted that her dog and the kitten would never
  11 get along, and the cat had taken a liking to me, and thus Maytag
  12 became my ward.
