8bb25908 5 Building and Installing Emacs from Bazaar

7Building Emacs from Bazaar requires some tools that are not needed
8when building from a release. You will need:
d0bec92c 9
66b87493 10autoconf - at least the version specified near the start of
c4444d16 11 configure.ac (in the AC_PREREQ command).
66b87493
GM
12automake - we recommend at least version 1.11.
13makeinfo - not strictly necessary, but highly recommended, so that
14 you can build the manuals.
15
16The `autogen.sh' script can help you figure out if you have the
17necessary tools.
18
19The first time you build, there are a couple of extra steps.
ac45a338 20First, generate the `configure' script and some related files:
66b87493
GM
21
22 $ ./autogen.sh
d0bec92c 23
f6ca84c0 24(or you can just run `autoreconf -i -I m4').
66b87493
GM
25
26You can then configure your build (use `./configure --help' to see
27options you can set):
28
29 $ ./configure
d05e7e67 30
4eec8d6f
PE
31If you want later builds to go faster, at the expense of sometimes
32doing the wrong thing if you update the build procedure, you can
501390c5 33invoke "./configure -C" instead.

e0156c8d 35Some of the files that are included in the Emacs tarball, such as
8bb25908
KF
36byte-compiled Lisp files, are not stored in Bazaar. Therefore, to
37build from Bazaar you must run "make bootstrap" instead of just "make":
e0156c8d 38
90412b21 39 $ bzr pull
e0156c8d
EZ
40 $ make bootstrap
41

42Normally, it is not necessary to use "make bootstrap" after every
43update from Bazaar. "make" should work in 90% of the cases and be
44much quicker.

e0156c8d
EZ
46 $ make
47
48(If you want to install the Emacs binary, type "make install" instead
49of "make" in the last command.)

51Occasionally the file "lisp/loaddefs.el" (and similar automatically
52generated files, such as esh-groups.el, and *-loaddefs.el in some
53subdirectories of lisp/, e.g. mh-e/ and calendar/) will need to be
54updated to reflect new autoloaded functions. If you see errors (rather
55than warnings) about undefined lisp functions during compilation, that
6c3ab469
GM
56may be the reason. Finally, sometimes there can be build failures
57related to *loaddefs.el (e.g. "required feature `esh-groups' was not
58provided"). In that case, follow the instructions below.

GM
59
60To update loaddefs.el (and similar files), do:
93e3e16a
MB
61
62 $ cd lisp
e2401940 63 $ make autoloads
93e3e16a 64
10209171 65If either of the above partial procedures fails, try "make bootstrap".

66If CPU time is not an issue, the most thorough way to rebuild, and
67avoid any spurious problems, is always to use this method.

69Users of non-Posix systems (MS-Windows etc.) should run the
70platform-specific configuration scripts (nt/configure.bat, config.bat,
71etc.) before "make bootstrap" or "make"; the rest of the procedure is
e2401940 72applicable to those systems as well.
e0156c8d 73
8bb25908 74Because the Bazaar version of Emacs is a work in progress, it will
919bbce0
GM
75sometimes fail to build. Please wait a day or so (and check the
76archives of the emacs-buildstatus, emacs-devel, and bug-gnu-emacs
77mailing lists) before reporting such problems. In most cases, the
78problem is known about and is just waiting for someone to fix it.
79This is especially true for Lisp compilation errors, which are almost
80never platform-specific.
